Ulrik of Ranrike

Ulrik is the founder of the family, a famed warrior and respected partriarch.

839 Ulrik is born on the estate of Ranriki. His father is Sinfjotli the Young, son of Kol, son of Estrid, son of Sandulfr - whose brother Fot settled in Ostergotland - son of Hild of Skane. His mother is Gunni Arnkelsdatta, sister of Frodi who married Erling Helgasson who fought the armies of Emperor Charles the Great on many occasions.

At the time Louis the Pious is Emperor of the Frankish Empire and Aethelwulf has just been made king. For many years Ulrik travels and trades.

854 Wulf Thorgasson raids Wessex - King Aethelburt suffers severe defeats. Ulrik joins up with Wulf to fight against the Saxon levies.

859 Ulrik marries Herlauga and has three sons by her - Valgard, Afgrim and Skarf.

864 Herlauga dies shortly before Yule.

865 Vikings raid Paris; Ulrik takes part in the raid and fights at the battle of Pîtres where a bridge built by count Adalhard under orders of Charles the Bald brings them to a halt.

Vikings attack the Saxon shores - Ulrik meets up with Aelfgar, sent by King Aelfred to stop them.

867 Ulrik kills Thorfinn One-Eye and weds Sigrid Haraldsdottir.

868 Edmund of Sumersaete stops raids by Celts and Viking warbands at Cadbury.

869 Edmund meets Ulrik on Wessex border near Reading. A truce is made between Edmund and Ulrik.

Guthrum arrives with the Host in Essex. Ulrik's daughter Solveig is born in October of that year. Ulrik is summoned for help by Edmund on behalf of King Aelfred. Ulrik goes to Edmund's hall with his followers.

875 Ubbi Fostersonnr joins Ulrik's household.

877 Ulrik and Sigrid have a second daughter, Asa. Guthrum grants land to Ulrik on Osea Island. Some of the family arrives from Ranriki to settle after a trading voyage. The estate is managed by kinsfolk who stayed behind.

880 Ulrik settles with the family on Osea Island.
